Wheelabrator Technologies Renews Waste Disposal Agreements with 10 Bridgeport Area Communities

Agreements will provide municipalities with a cost-effective solution while generating clean, renewable energy for the region

BRIDGEPORT, Conn. — July 25, 2014 — Wheelabrator Technologies announced it has renewed long-term waste disposal agreements with 10 greater Bridgeport area communities. 

Under the terms of the new, 10-year agreement, the communities of Bethany, Bridgeport, Easton, Fairfield, Milford, Monroe, Stratford, Trumbull, Westport and Woodbridge annually will send 185,000 tons of post recycled waste to the Wheelabrator waste-to-energy facility in Bridgeport, where it will be converted into renewable electric power.

“This agreement with Wheelabrator provides our communities with a reliable, cost-effective solution to dispose of municipal waste while also generating clean, renewable energy for our residents”, said Fairfield First Selectman Mike Tetreau, who was elected Chair of the newly formed Greater Bridgeport Regional Solid Waste Interlocal Committee (GBRSWIC). First Selectman Tetreau added, “We all look forward to continuing our great relationship with Wheelabrator for the next ten years.”

Ed Boman, Assistant Director of Public Works of Fairfield, one of the chief negotiators of the deal said “I am pleased that the vision of our municipal leaders almost 30 years ago regarding the most environmentally beneficial processing of municipal solid waste that cannot be recycled has been reaffirmed.”

“For the past 26 years, Wheelabrator Bridgeport has been converting post-recycled waste into a clean, renewable source of electricity for the region”, said Vin Langone, Regional Vice President for Wheelabrator. “All 10 of these communities have been with us from the beginning, and we are pleased to have the opportunity to partner with them well into the future.”

Designed, constructed and operated by Wheelabrator Technologies, the Wheelabrator Bridgeport plant processes up to 2,250 tons per day of municipal solid waste. Inside the plant, waste is transferred to utility-type boilers that recover thermal energy in the form of high pressure steam, which is converted to electrical power by a turbine. Wheelabrator Bridgeport has an electrical generating capacity of 67,000 kilowatts; the equivalent of supplying the electrical needs of 83,000 Connecticut homes. The facility also recovers approximately 21,000 tons of ferrous and non-ferrous metals annually that would otherwise be disposed of.
