Wheelabrator Answers the Bell for Fire Department

Energy company donates life-saving equipment to fire department, town hall

SAUGUS, Mass. — March 25, 2014 — Renewable energy provider Wheelabrator Saugus has answered the call for help from the Saugus Fire Department.

The waste-to-energy company recently donated six automated external defibrillators (AEDs) to the fire department in its continued effort to ensure the town and schools are adequately prepared for emergency situations. The donation includes four devices to be placed on fire department apparatus and two for the town hall.

“This is a life-saving gift and we are extremely appreciative of the support from Wheelabrator Saugus,” said Fire Chief Don McQuaid during a recent visit to the renewable energy facility. “Time is the most important factor when someone goes into cardiac arrest.”

McQuaid said the new models will replace older equipment being repurposed for fire department vehicles and the public safety building. “We respond to all medical-aid calls so this is an extremely important tool to have in our arsenal,” McQuaid said. “They save lives — there’s no doubt about it.”

Plant Manager Eric Lucier said Wheelabrator was honored to fulfill the chief’s request. “We are actively involved in many Saugus community causes, none of which is more important than public safety,” he said. “It is critical that the Saugus Fire Department has the best available resources so it can continue to provide the highest possible level of public safety for Saugus residents. We are very happy to help.”

Wheelabrator previously donated 10 AEDs to Saugus Public schools, ensuring there is at least one in all seven school buildings. An AED is a medical device that analyzes the heart’s rhythm and, if necessary, delivers an electrical shock, known as defibrillation, which helps the heart re-establish an effective rhythm. According to the American Red Cross, improved training and access to AEDs could save 50,000 lives each year.
